The experience
Kamakura Station is where your guide meets you with a sign bearing your name. From there, the route unfolds around your preferences: Engaku-ji Temple, one of the Five Great Zen Temples, sits in a quiet compound where your guide walks you through the architecture and Zen customs. Hase-dera, known as the Flower Temple, offers ocean views from its observation deck. The Great Buddha of Kamakura (a bronze statue that anchors the town's identity) gets its history and cultural weight explained on the temple grounds. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, tied to the samurai founder Minamoto no Yoritomo, closes the loop on how Kamakura became what it is.
The guide is a Kamakura native speaking English, which means the stories come from someone who knows the town's layers. You're not following a fixed schedule. Instead, you tell the guide which sites matter to you and how much time you want to spend. Lunch is optional: a local restaurant meal or a vegan bento box can be arranged, or you can skip it entirely and keep moving. Temple and shrine admission fees (ranging from 300 to 500 yen per site) are separate from the tour price and depend on which stops you choose.
The tour runs 3, 4, or 6 hours depending on the option you pick. Komachi Dori Street, a shopping lane with local artisan shops, can be woven in if that appeals to you. Strollers are welcome, and the pace suits all fitness levels, though some walking between sites is built in.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What's the difference between the 3-hour, 4-hour, and 6-hour tour options?
The 3-hour tour covers the core sites in a quick loop; the 4-hour half-day option gives you time to linger and explore deeper; the 6-hour full-day tour lets you add more temples, shrines, and neighborhood walks like Komachi Dori Street. Your guide adjusts which stops fit into whichever length you choose.
Do I have to visit every temple and shrine, or can I pick which ones?
You pick. The guide tailors the itinerary to your interests, so you might focus on Zen temples, samurai history, or a mix of both. Tell your guide what draws you and they'll build the day around that.
Are temple and shrine entrance fees included in the tour price?
No, admission fees are separate. Engaku-ji costs 500 yen, Hase-dera 400 yen, and the Great Buddha temple 300 yen per person. You only pay for the sites you visit.
Is lunch included, and what are the options?
Lunch is optional. You can eat at a local restaurant, request a vegan bento box, or skip it entirely. If you want the bento, it starts at 1,500 yen per person and can be customized to your preferences.
What is Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, and why does the guide emphasize it?
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine is central to Kamakura's identity as a samurai capital. It's closely tied to Minamoto no Yoritomo, who founded the shogunate here in the 12th century. The guide explains the shrine's role in that history and points out seasonal attractions and key landmarks within the grounds.
Will I need to use trains to get between sites?
Possibly. If your itinerary includes Hase-dera, the Enoden train between Kamakura and Hase costs 200 yen per person. Some sites are walkable from the station. Your guide will let you know which transport makes sense for the route you've chosen.
