The Experience

Kamakura earned its reputation as the Capital of Zen when the style of Buddhism took root here at the end of the 13th century. The city now holds dozens of temples, and this tour focuses on five of the greatest: Engaku-ji, founded in 1282 as a memorial to soldiers fallen in the Mongol invasions, with its main gate dating from 1783; Kenchoji, the oldest Zen temple in Kamakura, established in 1253 and still home to a national treasure bell; Jochiji and Jomyoji, both ranked among the five great temples; and Hokokuji, known for a bamboo grove thick with over 2,000 stalks where you can sit in a tea house for matcha. You also have the option to visit the Great Buddha of Kamakura, an 11.4-meter bronze statue of Amida Buddha that has stood on the grounds of Kotokuin Temple for centuries, or Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, dedicated to the patron god of samurai.

The tour runs six hours and is built around your preferences. Before you book, you'll select which three to four sites matter most to you from the full list of options, whether that's the rock gardens designed by Zen master Muso Kokushi at Zuisenji, the hydrangea blooms at Meigetsuin (especially abundant in June), or the hiking trails that connect temples through Kamakura's wooded hills. Your guide, a government-licensed interpreter fluent in English, meets you on foot within a designated area of Kamakura and arranges the route to fit your choices and pace. This is a walking tour with no vehicle pickup. You'll navigate the city on foot, moving between sites at a rhythm that suits the group.

Entrance fees to each temple are paid separately at the gate, as are any meals or personal expenses. The guide's entry is included only at the temples you've chosen to visit. If you're traveling with a stroller or using a wheelchair, all areas and surfaces in Kamakura are wheelchair accessible, and public transportation options are available nearby to bridge longer distances between sites. The tour suits all fitness levels, though the terrain includes some hills and the pace depends on your group's comfort.

Can I visit the Great Buddha and a Zen temple on the same tour?

What is Kamakura's bamboo grove, and can I see it on this tour?

Hokokuji Temple is known for a small bamboo grove with over 2,000 dark green stalks behind the main hall. Narrow pathways lead through it to a tea house where you can sit and drink matcha for a small fee while looking into the grove. It's one of the sites available to choose for your tour.

Public transportation options are available nearby if you need to cover longer distances, and all areas are wheelchair accessible. The guide arranges the route based on your selected sites and how you prefer to move through the city.

What is the difference between Engaku-ji and Kenchoji temples?

Engaku-ji, founded in 1282, is the second-ranked of Kamakura's five great Zen temples and was built as a memorial to soldiers from the Mongol invasions. Its main gate dates from 1783. Kenchoji, established in 1253, is the oldest and highest-ranked Zen temple in Kamakura. It holds a national treasure bell and stretches far into the forested hills behind its entrance gate.

Are entrance fees included in the tour price?

No. Entrance fees to temples are paid separately at each site you visit. The guide's entry fee is covered only at the temples you've selected for your itinerary. Meals, tea house visits and other personal expenses are also separate.
