Before the train, you've already been moving through the day. You cross the Togetsukyo Bridge—the iconic one, originally built in the Heian Period and rebuilt in the 1930s—and it frames the Katsura River and the mountains beyond. The Kimono Forest is nearby, 600 acrylic cylinders standing 2 meters tall, each one dressed in traditional Kyo-yuzen fabrics, 32 different designs in total. Nonomiya Shrine sits in the district too, small and distinctive with its black torii gate instead of the red ones you see everywhere else. These aren't penned animals—they're protected as Natural Monuments, and they've coexisted with humans here for over 1,300 years. You feed them, they bow, and it's one of those moments that feels both completely ordinary and slightly surreal.
