Explore Nikko's natural and cultural highlights
- Drive through Iroha Slope
- Visit Kegon Waterfall
- Explore Lake Chuzenji area
- Walk around Senjogara marshland
- Tour Tokugawa Ieyasu shrine complex
The Experience
The driver handles the navigation and the roads while you decide which stops matter most. Kegon Waterfall drops 97 metres straight down into the rocks below, and a lift takes you to the basin to feel the force of it close up. Lake Chuzenji, the largest lake in Tochigi, stretches 25 kilometres and was a summer retreat for foreign embassies in the late 1800s. Walking trails run the water's edge and seasonal blooms (cherry blossoms in spring, azaleas in early summer, autumn leaves in October) frame the view. Iroha Slope winds through 48 hairpin turns up the mountainside, each one named after a syllable of the old Japanese alphabet, and it's known for viewing autumn leaves. Toshogu Shrine, the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, holds 55 buildings including eight national treasures. The carved and lacquered details draw from craftsmanship across the country, and the "Sleeping Cat" and "Three Monkeys" carvings are the landmarks everyone looks for.
You pick which three or four sites fit your day, and the driver adjusts the route based on traffic and your meeting point. The private vehicle means no waiting for group departures or public transit schedules, and you move at your own pace between stops. A minivan seats up to five passengers, a van up to eight, or a regular car up to three. The choice depends on your group size and luggage.

Top questions
Can children come?
6 to 11 years, free; under 6, free.
What is Kegon Waterfall like when you get there?
Kegon Waterfall is Nikko's most famous of 48 waterfalls, with water falling 97 metres straight down. A lift takes you to the basin at the base so you can stand close to the force and roar of the water. The waterfall looks particularly dramatic in May with fresh green leaves, in June with house martins, or in January and February when frozen streams cling to the rock face in blue ice.
Can I customize which sites we visit?
Yes. You choose three to four sites from Kegon Waterfall, Lake Chuzenji, Iroha Slope, Toshogu Shrine and Senjogara marshland. The driver will work with your preferences and adjust the route based on traffic and your meeting point, so the itinerary can shift depending on the day.
What does Toshogu Shrine contain?
Toshogu Shrine is the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The shrine complex holds 55 buildings including eight national treasures and 34 listed buildings, most rebuilt in the 17th century. The highlights are the sumptuous carved and lacquered details, the "Sleeping Cat" carving, and the "Three Monkeys" with their "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" poses.
Do I need to pay entrance fees separately?
Yes. Entrance fees to the sites are not included in the tour price and are paid separately at each location.
Which vehicle option fits a group of five with luggage?
The minivan seats up to five passengers and is the best fit for a group of five traveling with bags. If you have more luggage or prefer extra space, the van accommodates up to eight passengers.
