Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Nikko's highlights by private car

  • Drive through Iroha Slope
  • Visit Kegon Waterfall
  • Pass by Lake Chuzenji
  • Tour Nikko Tosho-gu Shrine

The Experience

Iroha Slope is a pair of winding roads made up of 48 hairpin turns connecting the lower elevations near Nikko to the mountainous region above. Each turn is named after one of the Japanese alphabet syllables, and the road is known as the best place to view autumn leaves. Your driver handles the curves while you take in the scenery: no navigating public transportation or figuring out which bus goes where.

Kegon Waterfall drops 97 metres straight down into the rocks below, and a lift takes you to the basin where you can feel the force and roar of the water up close. Lake Chuzenji, the largest lake in Tochigi, stretches for 25 kilometres and is framed by mountain scenery. The shrine complex at Nikko Tosho-gu contains 55 buildings, including eight national treasures, with sumptuous carvings and lacquered details. The "Sleeping Cat" carving and the "Three Monkeys" are the most recognizable symbols inside.

Because the tour is four hours and customizable, you work with your driver to shape the stops around what matters to you. Traffic and your meeting point may shift the exact itinerary, and the operator welcomes special requests. Just ask when you book. The tour ends at Nikko Tosho-gu, so plan your onward travel from there.

Top questions

Can children come?

6 to 11 years, free; under 6, free.

What is Iroha Slope and why is it famous?

Iroha Slope is a pair of winding roads with 48 hairpin turns connecting lower and higher elevations in Nikko. Each turn is named after a syllable of the Japanese alphabet, and the road is renowned as the best place to view autumn leaves in the region.

Can I see Kegon Waterfall up close?

Yes. Kegon Waterfall drops 97 metres into the rocks below, and a special lift takes visitors down to the basin where you can experience the force and roar of the water close up. The waterfall is impressive year-round, though it looks particularly striking in May with fresh green leaves, in June with house martins, or in January and February when frozen streams create "12 falls" clad in blue ice.

What is Nikko Tosho-gu and what will I see there?

Nikko Tosho-gu is the shrine where Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, is enshrined. The complex contains 55 buildings, including eight national treasures and 34 listed buildings, most rebuilt in the 17th century. The highlights are sumptuous carvings, lacquered and richly coloured details, the "Sleeping Cat" carving, and the "Three Monkeys" with their "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" poses.

How does the customizable itinerary work?

You choose three to four sites from the tour's highlights (Iroha Slope, Kegon Waterfall, Lake Chuzenji, and Nikko Tosho-gu) based on your interests. Your driver will work with you to shape the stops, though the exact itinerary may shift depending on your meeting point and traffic conditions. The operator welcomes special requests when you book.

What vehicle sizes are available?

You can choose a regular car for up to three passengers, a minivan for up to five, or a van for up to eight. All vehicles are wheelchair accessible, and specialized infant seats are available if you contact the operator directly when booking.
