The Experience

The tour departs early from Ginza in an air-conditioned bus, heading toward Nikko's mountainous terrain about two hours away. You'll pass through scenic countryside before arriving at the Shinkyo Bridge, a bright red wooden structure that spans the Daiya River and marks the entrance to the sacred Nikko area. From the bus you get a panoramic view of this landmark before moving on to the main attraction.

Toshogu Shrine is the centerpiece—a lavish mausoleum of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and one of Japan's most ornately decorated shrines, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The shrine is famous for its vibrant colors, intricate carvings, and symbolic details like the "Three Wise Monkeys" and the "Sleeping Cat." If you choose the admission option at checkout, you'll walk inside the complex to see the five-story pagoda and richly adorned inner areas while your guide explains the Tokugawa family's role in Japanese history. After a 40-minute bus ride, you arrive at Kegon Falls, a 97-meter waterfall in Nikko National Park and one of Japan's most striking natural features. You'll have 80 minutes here to walk to the observation deck or take an elevator down to the base of the falls for a closer look. This is when most travelers stop for lunch at a nearby restaurant serving local specialties like yuba (tofu skin) and freshwater fish dishes. The final stop is Lake Chuzenji, a serene mountain lake formed by volcanic activity, where you can stroll the lakeside with Mount Nantai rising in the background before the return bus ride to Ginza. Note: during January and February, weather closures may replace the Kegon Falls and lake visit with a panoramic view of Rinnoji Temple and Futarasan Shrine instead.
