Nikko day trip from Tokyo: Kegon Waterfall & Chuzenji Lake
A 97-meter waterfall plunges straight down from the lake where you stand.
This day trip from Tokyo takes you to Nikko's mountain landmarks in a single 10-hour outing with round-trip transfers and an English-speaking guide. You'll pass the red-lacquered Shinkyo Bridge by bus, explore Toshogu Shrine (if you add the ticket), witness Kegon Waterfall dropping 97 meters into a rocky gorge, and have free time to walk the shores of Chuzenji Lake. The tour includes admission to Toshogu or runs without it. You choose at checkout. Weather closures swap the waterfall visit for a panoramic view of Rinnoji Temple instead.

The experience
Ten hours sounds long, but the drive from Tokyo eats most of it, leaving you with real time at each stop instead of a rushed blur. The route opens with a slow pass through Nikko's historic center, where the Shinkyo Bridge (a red-lacquered arch over the Daiya River framed by cedar trees) comes into view from the bus. Your guide shares the bridge's history and spiritual significance as the gateway to Nikko's sacred sites, and the pace lets you photograph it without the bus moving on.
Toshogu Shrine is your next stop if you've chosen the ticket option. The shrine sits deep in cedar forest as the burial place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the shogun who unified Japan. You'll walk stone pathways lined with towering trees, climb steps to the mausoleum, and stand in front of the Yomeimon Gate (an ornate structure covered in gold leaf and intricate carvings), and the relief of the Three Wise Monkeys carved into wood. A guide walks you through the symbolism and the Edo-period history woven into every detail. If you skip the ticket, you'll have free time elsewhere in Nikko instead.
Kegon Waterfall is the centerpiece. The water drops 97 meters from Lake Chuzenji into a gorge, and you'll have time on the upper observation deck (free and included) to watch it fall and photograph the mist rising off the rocks. An elevator descends to a lower platform closer to the base if you want to pay separately and go on your own during free time. The upper view is complete on its own. Lunch happens at a local restaurant nearby, where you can order regional dishes like yuba (tofu skin) or soba noodles, or browse souvenir shops before moving on.
The day ends at Chuzenji Lake with free time to walk the shoreline, sit by the water, or explore small shrines and viewpoints scattered around it. The lake sits at the foot of Mount Nantai, and the reflection of the mountains in the water shifts with the season: lush green in summer, vivid red and gold in autumn. Cafés and shops line the shore if you want to rest before the drive back to Tokyo.

Is this one for you?Choose the option with Toshogu Shrine if you want to step inside Nikko's most important cultural landmark and learn the history of the Tokugawa shogunate from your guide. Skip it if you prefer more free time at the natural sites. Either way, the fixed schedule fits all three main stops (the bridge, the waterfall, and the lake) into a single day from Tokyo.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
How long is the drive from Tokyo to Nikko on this tour?
The total tour runs 10 to 11 hours, and most of that time is the round-trip drive from Tokyo. The itinerary includes travel time, so the actual time spent at each stop is shorter than the full duration.
What is Toshogu Shrine and why is it on this tour?
Toshogu Shrine is the burial place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the shogun who unified Japan in the 1600s. The shrine sits in a cedar forest and features ornate carvings, gold leaf details, and the famous Three Wise Monkeys relief. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site and the centerpiece of Nikko's cultural heritage. Admission is optional. You can add the ticket at checkout or skip it and spend the time elsewhere in Nikko.
Can you get closer to Kegon Waterfall than the upper observation deck?
Yes, an elevator descends to a lower observation platform near the base of the waterfall, where you can feel the mist and hear the water more intensely. The elevator is not included in the tour price, but you can pay to use it on your own during the free time at the falls. The upper deck view is complete and included, so the elevator is optional.
What happens at Chuzenji Lake during the free time?
Chuzenji Lake sits at the foot of Mount Nantai and offers walking paths along the shore, benches to sit and rest, and small shrines and viewpoints to explore. You can photograph the lake and mountains, visit cafés and souvenir shops, or simply relax by the water. The scenery changes by season: summer brings lush green, autumn brings vivid foliage, and winter brings snow-capped views.
What happens if bad weather closes the mountain roads?
If weather-related road closures prevent access to Kegon Falls, the tour replaces that stop with a panoramic visit to Rinnoji Temple instead. The rest of the itinerary continues as planned.
Is lunch included in the tour price?
Lunch is not included. You'll have free time at a local restaurant near Kegon Waterfall to order and pay for regional dishes such as yuba, soba noodles, or a Japanese set meal. Bring cash, as not all shops accept cards.
