Hands shoved deep in my pockets, I watched our guide—Ayumi—trace the red curve of Shinkyo Bridge with her finger. She told us it’s where the human world meets the sacred one. I tried to imagine crossing that line, but mostly I just noticed the way the river below sounded colder than it looked. The morning air in Nikko had that sharp pine smell, almost sweet. Ayumi grinned when I asked if we’d see real samurai today—she said maybe not, but we’d get close enough at Edo Wonderland.

Walking into Toshogu Shrine felt like stepping into a storybook someone forgot to finish. Gold everywhere, carvings tucked in corners—even monkeys peeking out (the “see no evil” ones). It was busier than I expected for a weekday; old women in bright scarves whispering prayers, schoolkids giggling over their boxed lunches. Ayumi pointed out Tokugawa Ieyasu’s mausoleum and told us how he basically invented Tokyo as we know it. My feet started to ache by then but somehow I didn’t mind—I kept noticing little things: incense smoke curling up against the cold, a sudden hush when we reached the main gate.

The afternoon spun out differently depending on what you wanted. We took the Akechidaira ropeway—my knees went wobbly at first—and stared down at Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls. The wind up there was wild; my hair kept slapping me in the face while Ayumi tried to point out Mt. Nantai through the clouds (I pretended I could see it). Some folks from our group peeled off for Ashikaga Flower Park instead—Ayumi said spring is best for wisteria but even now you could catch something blooming if you looked close enough.

I did end up trying on a kimono at Edo Wonderland later—couldn’t resist after seeing a whole family dressed as ninjas posing by a fake castle. The staff played along, bowing low and calling me “hime”—princess—which made me laugh so hard I nearly lost my obi. There’s something about pretending for an afternoon that sticks with you longer than you’d think.
