The experience

The day starts at Shinkyo Bridge, the wooden structure believed to connect the human world to the spiritual realm where Mt. Nantai is worshipped. From there, your guide leads you through Toshogu Shrine itself: built in the early 17th century as the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu and described as the most ornate architecture in eastern Japan. The main gate alone, known as Higurashi no mon, is elaborate enough to occupy a full day. The shrine complex also holds the mausoleum of Ieyasu's grandson, Iemitsu, and the mysterious Jizo statues said to change in number each time you count them.

In the afternoon, you choose your direction. Edo Wonderland lets you step into the 18th century: you can rent a samurai costume, a ronin outfit, a feudal lord's robes or a princess's kimono, then move through the grounds as part of the historical scene. The ninja show is popular. Alternatively, you can explore Nikko's natural side: taking the Akechidaira ropeway for views over Lake Chuzenji, visiting Kegon Falls (one of Japan's three most celebrated waterfalls), or stopping at Ashikaga Flower Park, where wisteria blooms in spring and seasonal flowers rotate through the year. Your guide will suggest combinations based on what interests you most, and the route adjusts around weather and traffic.

The tour runs eleven hours with a private driver handling all navigation. One bottled water per person is included.
