Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Nikko's cultural and natural sites

  • Visit Toshogu Shrine
  • Walk across Shinkyo Bridge
  • See Kegon Falls
  • Explore Lake Chūzenji

The experience

Toshogu Shrine opens the day: a 17th-century UNESCO World Heritage complex of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines built into the mountainside. Your guide walks you through the grounds and explains the history and spiritual significance woven into every structure. From there, the route takes you to Shinkyo Bridge, a timber arch built in the same era that crosses the Daiya River and marks the entrance to the Rinno-ji temples. The bridge's red wood stands vivid against the forest, and it's the kind of landmark that stops you mid-step.

Futarasan Jinja Shrine comes next, a quieter spiritual site embraced by the surrounding nature. Then the tour climbs toward Lake Chūzenji, where Kegon Falls drops 97 meters from the clifftop: one of Japan's three highest waterfalls and recognized in 1927 as one of the Eight Views that defined the country's landscape. The falls were formed when lava flows from Mount Nantai, which erupted 20,000 years ago, rerouted the Daiya River. You view them from an elevated platform, and the scale is immediate.

The car is air-conditioned and private to your group. Your guide speaks English and handles the route and timing. Pickup from Tokyo is included, as are parking fees at each stop. Admission to Toshogu Shrine and the other sites costs extra and is not part of the booking. The full day runs seven hours, which gives you time to move between sites without rushing and to spend a few minutes at each one.
