Craft your own lunch in a local Kamakura home, then explore with it in hand
Make homemade sushi rolls and Japanese side dishes in a private home in Kamakura, then pack everything into a bento box you take with you. The two-hour class covers roll-making, a tamagoyaki omelet, a decorative sausage, and matcha jelly. Vegan bento is available on request. Instruction is in English or Japanese, children from age 4 are welcome, and you leave with a printed recipe and your finished lunch ready to eat during your afternoon in town.
The Experience
Two hours in a private home in Kamakura teaches you to roll sushi with fillings you choose, make a Japanese-style tamagoyaki omelet, shape a tako-san sausage (an octopus-shaped piece), and prepare matcha jelly. You pack all of it into a bento box yourself. The packing is part of what you learn. The class also covers home-style Japanese side dishes, so you understand the everyday cooking behind what you eat in Japan, not just the restaurant version.
After the lesson, the bento is yours to carry. The operator recommends eating it within two hours (one hour in summer), so it's built to be your lunch while you walk around Kamakura afterward. A supermarket visit is part of the experience too. You'll see what Japanese home cooks actually buy and what ingredients go into bento-making. You also make a chopstick holder using origami, and you take home a printed recipe so you can make the same dishes again.
Vegan bento without meat, fish or egg is available if you let the instructor know when you book. Solo travelers and couples are welcome. The class is held in a private home, not a commercial kitchen, so the setting itself is part of learning how Japanese home cooking works. Public transportation is nearby if you're staying elsewhere in the area or don't have a car.

Live guide in English and Japanese.
Can children come?
4 to 11 years. Under 4: no ticket type, they can't be added to a booking.
Can I make sushi rolls with fillings I choose?

Is the bento I make actually meant to be eaten, or is it just for the class?
It's meant to be eaten. You pack it yourself during the lesson, and it's designed to be your lunch in Kamakura afterward. The operator asks that you eat it within two hours (one hour in summer) after the class ends.
What if I'm vegan or have dietary restrictions?
Vegan bento without meat, fish or egg is available. Let the instructor know when you book so they can prepare the right ingredients and adjust the menu for you.
Do I need cooking experience to take this class?
No. The class teaches you how to roll sushi and make the side dishes from scratch. It's designed for people with no prior experience, and children from age 4 are welcome.
