Japanese home cooking class in Osaka Umeda: Make 5-dish menus
Cook real Japanese home meals in a private kitchen, not watch a demonstration
A two-hour private cooking class in a typical Osaka home where you make a full Japanese meal from one of five menus (ginger-grilled pork with miso soup and rolled egg omelette, Japanese stewed meat and potatoes, takoyaki, bento, or Japanese-style hamburg) using ingredients you can find at any Japanese supermarket. You cook alongside an Osaka mother, eat what you make, and learn how to shop for the same items at home.
The experience
The class happens in the kitchen and dining room of a real house in Osaka's Umeda neighborhood, not a commercial cooking studio. You choose your menu before you arrive: ginger-grilled pork with rice ball, rolled egg omelette and miso soup; Japanese stewed meat and potatoes with miso soup and rice ball; takoyaki and a Japanese dessert; a bento lunch box with miso soup; or Japanese-style hamburg with spinach in sesame dressing and rice ball. Each menu comes with water and Japanese tea. Since the class is private, you move through the lesson at your own pace and can ask questions about Japan as you cook.
All the ingredients and seasonings are things you can buy at a Japanese supermarket, and you'll get recipes designed to work at home. The instructor gives advice on how to shop in Japanese supermarkets, so you know where to find what you need and how to read the labels. The class includes a partial demonstration, but the focus is on you making the dishes yourself in the kitchen, then sitting down to eat them together.
