The experience
The day starts at Rocklands Bird Sanctuary, a 40-minute drive from Montego Bay into forested hills. The property has operated since 1962 and protects hummingbirds, white-winged doves, Jamaican woodpeckers and orioles. You tour the grounds and feed the birds by hand, or watch from the cottage garden. The choice is yours depending on how close you want to get. Entry is $25 per person.
After the sanctuary, you head to Lethe Great River for the bamboo raft ride. A certified captain pilots a 30-foot bamboo raft while you sit aboard, moving slowly through vegetation and learning about the local ecosystems. The raft carries a maximum of two people per vessel. Along the way, locals offer coconut water and riverside food, and a natural limestone massage is available if you want it.
The final stop is Benta River Falls in Williams Field, deep in rural Westmoreland: the kind of place locals visit, not tour groups. The property holds seven small waterfalls, a 20-foot-deep blue hole, and a spot where three rivers meet, all ringed by rainforest. You get transport in an air-conditioned vehicle throughout the day, bottled water and WiFi on board.
