We were bouncing along the road out of Ocho Rios, windows down because honestly, the air outside felt better than the minivan’s AC. Our driver, Devon, pointed out the old hydroelectric plant—said it’s the oldest in Jamaica. Didn’t expect to care about that, but there was something about how he told it. The hills smelled like wet earth after last night’s rain. I kept seeing flashes of blue between trees and wondering if that was already the Blue Hole or just my imagination running ahead.
The first step into the water at Cool Blue Hole is colder than you’d think for Jamaica. I hesitated—then our guide (I think his name was Andre?) just grinned and jumped straight off the rock. So I followed. It’s loud here: kids shrieking, water slapping rocks, people laughing from up on the rope swing. The mineral pools are almost too blue to look real. At one point I tried to say “thank you” in patois and Andre just burst out laughing—probably deserved it.
After drying off in patchy sun, we drove a bit further to the White River for bamboo rafting. The raft feels wobbly at first but then you settle in, drifting under trees while birds chatter overhead. There’s this moment where everything gets quiet except for the paddle dipping in water and you can smell wood and riverbank mud—kind of grounding after all that jumping around earlier. Our raft captain hummed something soft; I wish I’d asked what song it was.
