The Experience

There’s this sharp, smoky smell that hits you before you even see the first grill—jerk chicken, crackling over coals somewhere behind a faded green shack. The whole day felt like following Andre’s memories—he grew up near Negril and seemed to know everyone. At one stop, a guy called out to him in patois so fast I caught maybe two words (I laughed; Andre translated later). We tried curry goat with rice and peas at a spot where the cook sang along to old reggae playing from her phone. The sun kept shifting between thick clouds and sudden bursts of heat, so we ducked into fruit stands for cool sips of jelly coconut or bites of sticky banana bread.
