The water catches fire, and you bathe in it safely.
A guided activity at Firewater Pond near Ocho Rios where you swim in naturally heated, mineral-rich water that the pond keeper sets alight. You spend roughly an hour in the grotto's bamboo-shielded enclosure, immersing yourself in the hot, bubbly water while flames shoot up around you. The methane seeping from the ground below is what gives the pond its name and its fire.

The experience
About 30 minutes from your pickup point in Ocho Rios, a winding rutted road leads to a secluded grotto known more to locals than tourists. Your guide will share the pond's history on the drive and pay the $40 entrance fee when you arrive, leaving you to change into your swimsuit. The clearing opens onto a bamboo- and tarpaulin-shielded enclosure protecting the pond, which stays naturally hot and bubbly year-round because of the mineral concentration in the water.
Once inside, you spend roughly an hour in the water itself. The pond keeper (grandson of the woman who discovered the pond's properties) regularly sets the surface alight, and you can play in the flames as they shoot up without risk of burning. If you want the optional 15-minute massage, the keeper will use a towel soaked in the heated water to work your legs, a signature treatment that costs $80 extra and goes directly to him. A cold drink stand sits nearby for when you're ready to leave.
The drive back to your meeting point gives you time to dry off and settle. Bring a swimsuit and a towel. Water shoes are optional. Your guide provides an air-conditioned vehicle, cold bottled water, and English-language commentary throughout.

Is this one for you?You bathe in the pond yourself while the keeper sets the water alight. This is a hands-on, immersive experience, not a viewing tour. It suits anyone comfortable swimming in naturally heated mineral water and wanting something genuinely different from the typical resort attractions. The remote location and small-group format mean you'll share the space with far fewer people than the crowded usual sites.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Infant (under 5): free.
What exactly happens when the pond keeper sets the water on fire?
Methane seeps up from the ground below the pond and collects at the surface, where the keeper ignites it. The flames shoot up into the air above the water, and you can safely bathe and swim while they burn around you: the mineral content and heat of the water protect you from any risk of burning.
How long do I actually spend in the water at Firewater Pond?
You have roughly 45 minutes to an hour to immerse yourself in the pond once you arrive at the site. The total activity time, including changing clothes and the drive back, runs about two hours from pickup to drop-off.
Is the optional massage worth the extra $80?
The pond keeper offers a 15-minute massage using a towel soaked in the heated mineral water, which many visitors find deeply relaxing after time in the pond. It's a choice you make on the day. You pay the keeper directly if you want it.
What do I need to bring to Firewater Pond?
Wear or bring a swimsuit and a towel. Water shoes are optional but can be useful on the terrain. Your guide provides cold bottled water, and a stand near the pond sells cold drinks if you want something after your time in the water.
How remote is Firewater Pond, and is the road to it difficult?
The pond sits about 30 minutes' drive from Ocho Rios on a winding, rutted road that signals you're heading to a secluded spot. Your guide handles the driving. You just need to be comfortable with the terrain on the way in and out.
