The experience

You move from one natural pool to the next, each one deeper than the last.

After Dunns River, you're driven about 20 to 30 minutes inland to Island Gully Falls, known locally as Blue Hole. This is where the day shifts from hiking to action: you climb the waterfall, jump from the rocks into the pools below, and swing out on ropes over the water. You'll have 2 to 3 hours to move at your own pace between these activities. The setting is lush and the water is deep enough that the jumps are safe once you've picked your height.
