The experience

Dunn's River Falls is the centerpiece of the morning. Your guide meets you at the beach and walks you through a waiver before the climb starts: the total ascent from sand to top is roughly 600 feet of terraced travertine rock, the only formation of its kind in the Caribbean. There are pools along the way where you stop for photos, and if the full climb isn't for you, exit points let you turn back without penalty. You'll spend about an hour and forty-five minutes here, enough time to move at your own pace and ask your guide to point out the spots that appeared in the James Bond film Doctor No.

The drive between Dunn's River and Luminous Lagoon passes through Montego Bay's north coast. Your guide slows down at Rose Hall Great House, an 18th-century plantation home built on high ground, so you can photograph the architecture and hear its history, including the legend of Annie Palmer, the plantation owner whose death in 1831 left the house supposedly haunted. Greenwood Great House comes next, a similar-era structure with a more peaceful atmosphere, and you'll pass through Runaway Bay, a scenic stretch between coastline and mountains where the town's name itself carries competing origin stories your guide will share.

At Luminous Lagoon in Falmouth, a Glistening Waters representative greets you at the terrace and serves rum punch or fruit punch at the bar. You board a low-sided boat with an outboard engine for a one-hour adventure on water that glows due to bioluminescent microorganisms. Bring your swimsuit and towel if you want to swim. The glow is visible on your skin and clothes as you move through the water, and fish pass by with their own luminescence. Your captain provides the history and is available to answer questions. The tour ends with an optional stop at Scotchies Outdoor Garden Restaurant for jerk chicken or pork if you want to add a meal.
