The experience

The Blue Hole is a secluded natural sinkhole ringed by untouched forest, with several small pools feeding into a large main pool beneath a 20-foot waterfall. The waterfall is known for cliff jumps and body slams. You decide how deep you want to go. On the way there, a lone vendor sells coconut jelly, a refreshing snack worth stopping for. The whole stop lets you move at your own pace: swim in the pools, jump from the rocks, or simply float and take in the quiet.

Lunch happens at Scotchies, where the jerk pork and jerk chicken are the real thing, not tourist versions. You'll also find fry dumplings, fry breakfast and other Jamaican staples. This is where you buy your own meal. The tour covers the stop and the transport there, not the food itself. After eating, you head to the Luminous Lagoon, also called Glistening Waters.

The lagoon glows because millions of phosphorescent phytoplankton live where salt water meets fresh water. A glass-bottom boat takes you out onto the water so you can watch the organisms light up around the hull and see fish swimming through blue halos. You can jump in and swim among them. The phytoplankton are harmless, and the experience is unlike anything else on the island. The whole tour runs six to eight hours depending on how long you linger at each stop, and your private guide means you're not waiting for a group or sticking to a fixed schedule.

Can you actually jump off the rocks at the Blue Hole?

Yes. The Blue Hole has a 20-foot waterfall and pools deep enough for jumping, and the tour is built around that. How high you jump is up to you: some people wade, others dive from the rocks. The water is natural and the spot is designed for it.

What's the food situation, is lunch included?

Lunch is not included. You buy your own meal at Scotchies. The tour gets you there and gives you time to eat, but you pay for the jerk chicken, pork, dumplings or whatever you order. Budget for it separately.

What happens at the Luminous Lagoon? Do you actually see it glow?

Yes. The lagoon is full of phosphorescent phytoplankton that light up when disturbed. You'll see the water glow around the glass-bottom boat and around your body if you swim in it. Fish appear to swim through blue light. It's real bioluminescence, not artificial.
