Five wines, a vineyard walk, and the winemaker pouring them himself

Taste five wines produced by Francesco, the winemaker and owner, at his cellar near Perugia over two hours. The tasting includes both the dry and passito versions of Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, paired with bruschetta made from the estate's own olive oil, a board of cured meats and local cheeses, and almond tozzetti. The visit opens with a walk through the vineyard before moving into the cellar for the guided tasting. English and French-speaking guide. Minimum age 18.

The experience

Two hours starts with a walk through the vineyard where Francesco grows the grapes that become the wines you'll taste. You move into the cellar for the guided tour, seeing how the wine is made, then sit down to taste five of his productions side by side. The centerpiece is Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG (you'll try it both dry and as passito, a sweeter version made from dried grapes) each one paired with bruschetta topped with the estate's own extra virgin olive oil, a cutting board of cured meats and local cheeses, and almond tozzetti to finish.

Francesco leads the tasting himself, so you're learning directly from the person who made the wine. Bottled water is included. Anyone under 18 gets a non-alcoholic beverage instead of wine. The cellar, vineyard paths and tasting areas are all wheelchair accessible, and the experience suits any fitness level.

Is this one for you?Small groups work well here because Francesco leads the tasting himself and can answer questions about each wine as he pours. This suits anyone who wants to taste serious Umbrian wine in the place it's made, with the person who made it, rather than in a classroom or a crowded tasting room.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and French.

What exactly is Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG?

Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG is a red wine produced in the Montefalco region of Umbria, made from the Sagrantino grape. At this tasting, you'll taste it in two forms: the dry version and the passito, which is made from grapes dried after harvest to concentrate the flavors and create a sweeter wine.

Do I walk through the vineyard before or after the cellar tour?

The vineyard walk comes first, before you enter the cellar. You'll see where the grapes grow, then move into the cellar to learn how they're turned into wine, and finish with the seated tasting.

Is this tasting suitable if I don't usually drink wine?

Yes. The experience is built around learning how Francesco makes his wines, and the food pairings (bruschetta, cheeses, cured meats and almond tozzetti) are substantial. If you prefer not to drink, a non-alcoholic beverage is served instead.
