The Experience

We stepped onto the speedboat at Sorrento’s marina just after 9 — I could still smell the espresso from a bar nearby. Our captain, Marco, waved us aboard with a grin and a quick “Andiamo!” The boat cut through the water fast enough that my hair whipped around and I had to laugh. Passing Marina Grande, we slowed so Marco could point out the old fishermen mending nets on shore, their hands moving almost automatically. The Baths of Queen Giovanna looked half wild from the water — crumbling stone walls tangled with green. I tried to picture Roman nobles swimming there but mostly just noticed how clear the sea was, almost glassy.

The first real stop was the White Grotto. Sunlight bounced off those pale rock formations inside — it felt cooler in there, damp and echoey. Marco tossed out snorkeling gear and we all hesitated for a second (the water looked cold) but then someone just jumped in. It was sharp at first but then sort of perfect. I floated on my back for a minute watching tiny bubbles drift up past stalactites. After that we cruised along Capri’s cliffs — honestly, I’d never seen so many shades of blue and green in one place. The Green Grotto was next; fish darted everywhere below us and someone said they saw a starfish but I missed it because I was busy trying not to swallow seawater.

We did the Blue Grotto too (it’s extra for that little rowboat), which is kind of surreal — you duck your head under this low arch and suddenly everything glows blue underneath you. There were other boats waiting so it felt a bit rushed but still worth it for that weird underwater light show. We stopped at Marina Piccola for snacks and prosecco — salty chips, cold beer, and sticky hands from opening bottles too fast. Then we got two hours on land in Capri itself. I wandered up narrow lanes behind a couple arguing about gelato flavors (I went with pistachio). The sun was hot but there was this faint lemon scent everywhere from some garden or maybe just someone’s perfume.

On the way back past Punta Carena lighthouse, Marco told us it’s one of Italy’s oldest — he seemed proud about that, like it belonged to him somehow. My skin felt tight from salt and sun by then; everyone got quiet for a bit as we sped home, just wind and engine noise and someone humming softly behind me. Even now when I close my eyes I can hear that sound — water slapping against hull, gulls calling overhead somewhere you can’t quite see.
