The Experience

You board the gozzo in the dark and head out from Positano while the sky is still black. The boat moves slowly enough that you can hear the water, and you'll drift past Praiano—the town built vertically into the cliffs—as the first light starts to break. The guide will position the boat so you're floating offshore when the sun clears the mountain behind Positano, its first rays warming the water and turning the sky and sea into shades of blue and azure. This is the moment the tour is built around: the sun rising in front of the vertical city, the light hitting the water in real time, the colors changing as you watch.

The Furore Fjord comes into view as you drift along the coast. The sun only reaches into the fjord in the early morning hours, so even in summer the water there stays cool and the light falls differently than it does on the open sea. You'll pass Conca dei Marini, a fishing village tucked into a natural inlet next to the fjord, famous for the Emerald Grotto and the sfogliatella pastry made there. The boat moves at a pace that lets you take it in without rushing.
