The experience
You're picked up at La Spezia port (or Carrara) and driven straight to Pisa, where you have about two hours to walk Piazza dei Miracoli on your own. The Leaning Tower stands in that square alongside the cathedral and baptistry. You can photograph it, circle it, and if you want to climb it, arrange that separately. The driver stays with the vehicle while you explore. There's no guided walk through the monuments, just the time and the space to see them at your own pace.
After Pisa, the drive to Lucca takes 30 minutes across the Tuscan countryside. Lucca is a walled medieval town, and you'll have three hours there: enough to walk the ramparts that ring the old city, eat lunch at a local restaurant, browse the shops, and wander the narrow streets inside. The driver-guide speaks English and can point out landmarks and answer questions, but this is free time, not a guided tour. You rejoin the driver when you're ready, and the return to La Spezia port is timed so you're back before your ship leaves.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and seats your group privately: no other travelers sharing the van. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles are available if you request one in advance, and foldable wheelchairs can be accommodated. The tour suits all fitness levels because the time in each town is yours to spend as you wish: walk as much or as little as you want, sit in a café, or rest in a piazza.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, Spanish and Italian.
How much time do I actually get to see the Leaning Tower and Piazza dei Miracoli?
You have about two hours in Pisa to walk around Piazza dei Miracoli, where the Leaning Tower, cathedral and baptistry all stand. That's enough time to see them, photograph them and walk the square, though climbing the tower requires a separate ticket and reservation you'd arrange on your own.
What can I do during the three hours in Lucca?
Lucca is a walled medieval city, and three hours lets you walk the ramparts, explore the streets inside the walls, have lunch at a restaurant, and shop. The driver-guide can suggest spots, but the time is yours to spend however you want.
Does the driver stay with me the whole time, or do I explore on my own?
You explore both towns on your own during the free time. The driver-guide is there to pick you up and drop you off, answer questions, and make sure you're back at the port on time. There's no guided walking tour of the monuments.
Will I definitely get back to the port in time for my ship?
Yes, the tour includes a back-to-port-on-time guarantee. The eight-hour schedule is built around cruise ship departures from La Spezia, so you'll be returned with time to spare.
Are entrance fees to the monuments included?
No. Entry fees to the Leaning Tower, cathedral, baptistry or any Lucca attractions are not included and are paid separately if you choose to enter them.
