The experience
The tour starts with a drive inland to Pisa, about an hour from the port. You'll see the Leaning Tower and Miracle Square on foot, with time to walk around the piazza. Entry to climb the tower is separate. After Pisa, the route heads back toward the coast and Cinque Terre, where the minivan drops you at the ferry point. From there, the guide leads you by boat and on foot through the villages scattered along the cliffs, Vernazzo among them, with narrow paths and steps connecting the stops. Monterosso, the largest village in the Cinque Terre National Park, rounds out the day before the return ferry and minivan ride back to the port.
The minivan holds up to 8 people, so larger groups split into two separate tours. Your guide speaks English or Italian and stays with the group all day, pacing the village visits and explaining what you're seeing. The boat and any train rides between villages cost extra and depend on your child's age if you're traveling with kids. Wear comfortable athletic shoes, a hat and sunscreen. The paths are steep and uneven in places, though there's no formal hiking involved. The full day runs about 9 hours from pickup to drop-off.
