The experience
Your driver meets you at the cruise ship in La Spezia and drives through the Tuscan hills to Lucca, where you have two hours to walk the medieval streets on your own. The city sits inside ancient walls lined with trees and pedestrian paths: the birthplace of composer Giacomo Puccini, layered with Roman, Renaissance and modern architecture. You navigate it at your own pace, stopping where you want to shop or photograph the narrow lanes.
After Lucca, the route turns to the countryside and a working winery-farm dedicated to Italian wine and food culture. Lunch is three courses of Tuscan cooking, paired with five tastings: wine, extra virgin olive oil, pepper olive oil, balsamic vinegar and truffle olive oil. The farm explains how each one is made and how it pairs with what's on your plate: a direct look at how Tuscan producers work, not a polished tasting room.
The afternoon takes you to Pisa for free time in Piazza dei Miracoli (the Miracles Square). You stand in front of the Leaning Tower itself, begun in the 12th century and still tilting because the soft ground beneath it could never fully support the weight. The Baptistery and Cathedral fill the same square. You photograph, wander and spend as long as you want there before the 5 PM return to your ship.
