The experience

The guide covers four to five hours of walking, but you set the rhythm: linger at Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, where the elliptical square sits above the foundations of a 2nd-century Roman amphitheater, or climb the 230 steps of Guinigi Tower (8€ entry) to see the city from 45 meters up, where trees grow on the roof.

The route moves through the Cathedral with its 12th-century asymmetrical facade and works by Tintoretto and Ghirlandaio, past the Clock Tower where noble families once built towers to display their status, and into the Church of San Michele in the ancient Roman forum. Can I enter the churches and towers mentioned in the tour, or do I just see them from outside?

You see the Cathedral and Church of San Michele from the outside, and the guide describes them fully. You're welcome to pay for entry if you want to go in. The Guinigi Tower costs 8€ to climb, and the Basilica of San Frediano costs 3€. Both are optional stops on the route.

What's the difference between Piazza dell'Anfiteatro and the other squares on the tour?

Piazza dell'Anfiteatro has an elliptical shape and four vaulted doors, and beneath it lie the foundations of a 2nd-century Roman amphitheater where gladiator fights once took place. The other squares (Piazza Napoleone and Piazza San Michele in Foro) are medieval and Renaissance centers of civic and religious life.

Do I need to bring headphones, or can I just use my phone's speaker?
