From there the route climbs the walls of Lucca—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best-preserved Renaissance fortification in Tuscany—to the Bastion of San Frediano. The guide walks you through the city's layout and explains why this Tuscan republic escaped Medici control, a distinction that shaped Lucca's independence for centuries.

Inside the Basilica of San Frediano, you see the frescoes that tell the story of the Holy Face's arrival in the city and learn about Santa Zita, the patron saint of Lucca and protector of servants and housewives. The guide then leads you down Via Fillungo, an ancient pilgrim route on the Via Francigena that is now the main shopping street. If time allows, you can taste Buccellato, a traditional Lucca dessert, and hear the legend tied to the Clock Tower.
