The experience

You arrive at the bike shop in Lucca and spend a few minutes with staff going over the route on your phone. The app works offline, so no mobile data drains while you ride. You get a bike lock, a phone holder for the handlebar, and either a standard trekking bike or an e-bike depending on which you choose at checkout. An emergency number stays in your pocket. Then you're on your own: no guide, no group, no fixed schedule.

The route follows the cycle path along the Serchio river park, moving north through open countryside toward the villa district. The terrain is easy, and the 25 km roundtrip takes most travelers between four and seven hours depending on how many stops they make. You pass through Villa Oliva and Villa Grabau on the way, but the destination is Villa Reale, where you can enter the park (entrance fee separate) and spend as long as you want on the grass, at the café, or exploring the grounds. The app tells you where to turn and what to expect, but the day is yours: linger at a villa, skip a stop, take a different path back if you want.

E-bikes are available if you're over 155 cm tall and at least 14 years old. Trekking bikes work for anyone over 155 cm. Specialized infant seats are available if you're bringing a small child. The bike frames are rated for riders up to 130 kg. If you're new to cycling or haven't ridden in years, the e-bike option removes the physical demand without removing the freedom to explore on your own schedule.

Can I spend time inside Villa Reale, or do I just ride past it?

Villa Reale's park and grounds are open to enter if you pay the admission fee (€10 for adults, €7 for ages 14–17, free for children under 14). You can stay as long as you want, picnic on the lawn, or stop at the café: the app just marks it as a stop on your route.
