The experience

The walk starts at the oldest gate of the Renaissance walls and moves upward onto the ramparts themselves, where the Cathedral of San Martino rises into view. From there you descend into the basement of the San Colombano bulwark: a shift from the open air into the stone interior that shows how the fortification was built into the city's body. The route then traces backward in time: you'll see the remains of the ancient Roman walls, the Colonna Mozza (a broken column marking where the Roman gate once stood), and the medieval Porta dei Borghi on Via Fillungo, each one a physical marker of when Lucca was rebuilt and reinforced.

The ascent to the San Frediano Platform lets you stand between two eras at once (the medieval walls and the Renaissance walls side by side) before descending toward the Church.
