Michelangelo's David tour: walk to chapel with sculptures of Day, Night, Dawn, and Dusk

A three-hour guided tour of Florence combining the Accademia Gallery, home to Michelangelo's original David and four unfinished Prisoners, with the Medici Chapels and their New Sacristy, where you see the artist's marble figures of the four times of day. The tour skips the long entry lines at both sites; a local guide leads in English, Italian or Russian. Tickets are booked separately and paid at the museum.

3h

Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Accademia Gallery and Medici Chapels

  • See Michelangelo's original David
  • View other Michelangelo masterpieces
  • Walk to Medici Chapels
  • Explore Old Sacristy sculptures
  • Visit Princes' Chapel decorations
  • See ancient musical instruments

The Experience

Three hours takes you through two of Florence's most concentrated collections of Michelangelo's work. The Accademia Gallery opens the tour with the original David—the seventeen-foot marble figure that defined Renaissance sculpture—along with the Palestrina Pietà, Saint Matthew, and the four Prisoners, left deliberately unfinished to show the artist's process. A guide walks you through the room and explains what you're standing in front of, rather than leaving you to read placards in a crowd.

After the Accademia, a short walk brings you to the Medici Chapels. The New Sacristy holds Michelangelo's most intimate work: the reclining figures of Day and Night, Dawn and Dusk, carved to frame the tombs of two young Medici dukes. The Princes' Chapel next door is an entirely different scale—the largest chapel in the world faced entirely in semiprecious stone, built using the commesso fiorentino technique that creates stone mosaics. The tour also shows you a collection of rare stringed instruments, including members of the Medici string quintet commissioned from Stradivari.

Skip-the-line entry is included, which matters: both sites draw long queues, especially in the morning. Your guide handles the logistics and timing so the two stops fit into a single afternoon without backtracking. Tickets must be reserved in advance through the museums' own system; the guide does not book them on your behalf, but the operator coordinates the schedule around your entry times.

Top questions

What exactly is inside the Accademia Gallery besides the David?

The Accademia holds Michelangelo's original David, the Palestrina Pietà, the marble Saint Matthew, and four unfinished Prisoners—sculptures that show the artist's technique and his process of carving figures from the stone.

What are the sculptures in the Medici Chapels' New Sacristy?

The New Sacristy contains Michelangelo's marble figures of Day, Night, Dawn and Dusk, positioned as reclining figures on the tombs of two young Medici dukes—some of his most celebrated work.

Do I book the museum tickets myself or does the guide arrange them?

You book tickets directly with the museums in advance; the operator no longer handles ticket reservations on your behalf. The guide coordinates the tour timing around your entry slots so both sites fit into the three hours without waiting.

How does skip-the-line entry work at these two museums?

Your guide brings you to a separate entrance at each site, bypassing the main queue. This is included in the tour and means you move straight into the galleries instead of standing in line outside.

What language does the guide speak?

The guide leads the tour in English, Italian, or Russian, depending on the group and the day. Confirm your language preference when you book.

Is there a dress code for visiting these museums?

Smart casual dress is recommended. The Medici Chapels are a sacred space, so covered shoulders and knees are respectful, though not strictly enforced.
