The Experience

“You have to try the honey here,” our guide Marco grinned as we shuffled into this tiny shop in Zafferana Etnea. I could smell something sweet and smoky—maybe chestnut?—before I even saw the jars lined up on the shelves. The lady behind the counter didn’t speak much English but handed us spoons anyway, and I swear I’ve never tasted anything like that orange blossom honey, sticky and floral. The drive up toward the first Etna winery was quiet for a while—just vineyards outside and that kind of bright Sicilian light that makes everything look extra sharp. At the winery, we started our Etna wine tasting with a white that tasted almost salty (in a good way), paired with these little bites of cheese and olives. The winemaker talked about volcanic soil like it was an old friend, waving his hands around while we walked through rows of vines.
