The experience

You arrive at the start ready to ride. The quad tour begins through the Ragabo pine forest, then turns onto old mountain trails where mules once walked: 90% of the route is off-road, on terrain a standard vehicle cannot reach. You'll pass through lava streams and ride toward the lava cave system, stopping to explore the cave and tunnels on foot and see how the rock formed from ancient eruptions.

The climb takes you to 1,800 meters, where the landscape shifts to show the raw scar of the 2002 eruption: the last major eruption on Etna's north side. On a clear day, the viewpoint lets you see all the way to the sea and sometimes to Taormina. You'll also stop at Zappinazzu, Etna's oldest pine tree, a marker of survival in this harsh terrain.

Bring layers and a jacket. The mountain is cooler than the base, and dust from the trails is real: sunglasses and a scarf or neck gaiter protect your eyes and mouth. The whole activity runs nearly four hours, which leaves the rest of your day open if you're staying in the region. Helmet and fuel are provided, and your guide handles the route and the stops.

What’s included

  • Helmet and underhelmet.
  • fuel for the quad.
  • experienced guide in English, Italian or French.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, French and Italian.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is a lava cave and what do you actually do inside it?

A lava cave is a tunnel formed by flowing lava that cooled on the outside while the molten rock inside drained away, leaving a hollow passage. On this tour you walk into the cave and tunnel system on foot to see the rock formations and understand how the volcano shaped the landscape.

How high does the quad climb and what does the 2002 eruption zone look like?

The ride reaches 1,800 meters altitude. At that elevation you see the destruction left by the 2002 eruption, the last major eruption on Etna's north side: bare rock, ash fields and the raw power of how the volcano reshaped the terrain.

Is this quad tour mostly on roads or trails?

90% of the route is off-road driving on old mountain trails and lava fields, not paved roads. Only a small portion uses regular roads, so you spend almost the entire activity on terrain a standard car cannot access.

What should I wear and bring for the dust and temperature?

Bring a jacket because the mountain is cooler than lower elevations. Wear sunglasses and a scarf or neck gaiter to protect your eyes and mouth from dust kicked up by the trails. Dress in layers suited to the season. If you wear shorts, you'll feel more heat from the engine.

Can children ride quads on this tour?

The minimum age is 7 years old, and children must have a good ability to hold on to the quad during the ride. Younger children or those without the strength to grip securely are not able to participate.
