You've just landed in Tuscany, or maybe you're halfway through a week in the region and have an afternoon free. Either way, Cinque Terre is close enough to reach from Lucca in a morning, but far enough that you need someone else to handle the route. The tour picks you up by bus or minivan and heads toward the coast—about an hour's drive—and then the villages start. Vernazzo comes first, the smallest of the five, built around a medieval castle that sits right above the water. From Vernazzo you take the boat—weather permitting—and the view from the water is the one you came for. Manarola is next, famous for its ancient tower houses, and then Monterosso, the biggest village and the one with a real beach. This is where the day opens up. Getting between the villages happens by train and boat, which means you're not walking the whole coast or climbing endless stairs to reach the next spot.
