Learn to taste olive oil the way the miller does

A one-hour activity at a family-run oil mill in Calabria where you follow the olive harvest and pressing process, train your nose to recognize quality extra virgin oil by scent, and taste organic oils with bruschetta and local wine in the olive grove. The mill welcomes children from age 2 and offers gluten-free and lactose-free options on request. A live English-speaking guide leads the experience.

The experience

How do you actually tell a good olive oil from a bad one? The mill starts by teaching you. After a 4 pm reception, the guide walks you through the journey from field to press: showing the equipment used for harvest, then moving into the tasting room where you learn to recognize quality by smell alone. Most people skip this step and go straight to drinking it. Here, the olfactory test comes first, so when you taste the organic oil on bruschetta, you already know what you're looking for.

The aperitif happens in the olive grove itself, with typical Calabrian products and a small selection of local wines. The whole visit runs about an hour, which means you're tasting and talking, not sitting through a lecture. Wheelchair access covers all areas and surfaces, and if you're traveling with infants or small children, strollers work fine: specialized infant seats are also available. Let the mill know ahead of time if you have allergies or intolerances, and they'll arrange gluten-free or lactose-free versions of the bruschetta and other offerings.
