The Experience

The tour opens in Alberobello, where the Trulli—cone-roofed stone houses stacked across hillsides—fill the first morning. You walk the area with your guide, then head to Bari's historical center to see St. Nicholas Basilica and the narrow streets of the old town, where the guide points out the layers of culture and faith that shaped the region. That night you stay in one of the operator's B&Bs in Bari, with breakfast included.

Day two takes you north into Gargano National Park, a full immersion into the Mediterranean landscape of northern Puglia—cliffs, villages, the sense of the coast without a fixed itinerary of stops. Day three is yours to shape: you can visit Matera, the UNESCO-listed plateau city carved into stone, or head to the Monti Dauni, the short mountains and villages of northern Puglia. The guide can help you decide based on what appeals, and you can even switch between the two on the morning itself. Another night in your Bari accommodation.

Day four is the cooking class. You travel to a private home restaurant in the countryside near Cassano delle Murge, in the Murge region outside Bari, where local and international female chefs teach you to make traditional dishes. Lunch is included—you eat what you've cooked. After the meal, the driver drops you at your hotel or airport. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and two additional languages, and pickup from your accommodation or airport is built into the price.
