The Experience

The tour opens in Bari's old city and surroundings, then moves outward each day to a different corner of Puglia. Day two takes you to Otranto, a UNESCO site on the Adriatic coast where the old town meets huge beaches. Day three is the longest inland push: transport to Matera for a full visit of the Sassi—ancient cave dwellings carved into the hillside—then to Altamura, known as the city of bread, where a cathedral built by King Frederick II stands nearly a thousand years old.

Day four heads to Castel del Monte, a 900-year-old octagonal castle on a hilltop, also UNESCO-listed and surrounded by mystery and secrets according to the operator. After that, you move to Barletta's historical center. The final day takes you to Polignano a Mare, a small town perched on sea rocks with views that anchor the trip, and then Monopoli, another historical center on the seafront. From there, you return to Bari or another point you specify for drop-off.

Transport is by air-conditioned vehicle throughout, and you stay in the same accommodation for all four nights, so luggage stays put after the first check-in. Breakfasts are included each morning. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French depending on the group, and the operator notes the tour covers landscapes, vineyards, tastings and sunsets across the region's hills and coastline.
