The Experience
How much time do you actually have in Florence? The Bargello lets you spend an hour or three. The ticket is yours to use, and the skip-the-line access means you're not burning daylight in a queue outside. The building itself, constructed in the mid-13th century as the seat of the Captain of the People, is part of what you're seeing. The palace later became the podestà's headquarters and the Council of Justice before the sculptures arrived. Starting in 1865, masterpieces by Donatello, Luca della Robbia, Verrocchio, Michelangelo and Cellini flowed into the rooms, and the collections have kept growing ever since.
Beyond the sculpture galleries, the museum holds bronzes, majolica, waxes, enamels, medals, ivories, ambers, tapestries, furniture, seals and textiles: many from the Medici collections, others from private donations. The audio guide, included with your ticket, speaks 11 languages and lets you move through the rooms on your own rhythm instead of following a group. All areas and surfaces are wheelchair accessible, and public transportation stops nearby if you're coming from another part of the city.
