The experience
The tour departs Jerusalem by bus heading south toward the Jordanian border at Eilat. After crossing into Aqaba, you'll have free time to explore the port city's alleys and visit the 16th-century Mamluk Castle, which overlooks Israel, Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia from a single vantage point. Optional activities here (a 3-hour boat tour with snorkeling or entry to a private beach with pool and Jacuzzi) cost extra. The bus then carries you inland to Wadi Rum, where the real landscape shift happens: a desert wilderness of towering rock formations that served as the filming location for Star Wars and Lawrence of Arabia.
Your first evening is spent on a Jeep safari through Wadi Rum's geology and famous sites, including the Seven Pillars of Wisdom rock formation, ending at sunset. You'll sleep in a glamping tent at a Bedouin camp on a half-board basis: private tent, bathroom, WiFi and climate control included. The accommodation can be upgraded to a futuristic Martian Bubble Tent for an additional cost. Dinner on the first day and breakfast the next morning are part of the package.
Day two takes you down the Desert Highway to Petra, where you'll spend 3–4 hours exploring the archaeological site on foot or horseback. The 2,300-year-old Nabataean capital is carved into red-hued rock cliffs. You'll walk through the Siq (a colorful gorge), see the ornate Treasury, the Obelisk Tomb, the ancient theater and decorated shrines along a colonnaded street. Lunch is included before the return journey to Jerusalem, with the bus dropping you at your designated point by evening. A professional guide leads both days in English. Spanish is available at additional cost. The border crossing process can take up to an hour and requires a valid passport. Israeli passport holders must use their Israeli passport at every crossing.
