The Experience

You enter at Jaffa Gate, one of the Old City's eight gates, and pass the Tower of David—built on remains of Herod the Great's defensive towers—before your guide takes you through the four quarters. The density of religious and historical sites in this tiny walled area is enormous, and a guide who knows where to go and what happened where transforms what could be a maze into a coherent day. Your guide contacts you after booking to discuss what matters most to you, so the route can shift toward the sites and stories you came to see.

The Temple Mount, Western Wall and Church of the Holy Sepulchre are the anchors. The Temple Mount held the two Jewish Temples and was the headquarters of the European Christian Crusaders; it now houses the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Golden Dome of the Rock Shrine (closed Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish and Muslim holidays). The Western Wall is where Jews have prayed for centuries—the most significant site in the world for Jewish faith. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre marks the tomb where, according to Christian tradition, Jesus was buried and rose again after three days. Between these major sites, you walk the Cardo, the Roman main street of the Jewish Quarter where commercial and social life once centered, and follow the Via Dolorosa—the path Jesus took to his crucifixion—joining at the third station after a rooftop view from the Austrian Hospice.

The tour runs five hours and includes a private guide in English; you arrange your own way to the starting point. Dress code is strict—no shorts or sleeveless tops, knees and shoulders covered for both men and women—and entry will be refused if you don't comply. You'll need moderate fitness to walk the Old City's streets and climb where the route takes you. Food and drinks are not included, though the guide can point you toward places to eat between stops.
