The Experience

You know that weird hollow sound the wind makes when it rushes through old stone? That’s what hit me first at Dunluce Castle, just standing there on the edge of Ireland with spray from the North Atlantic stinging my face. Our guide, Aidan, told us about Vikings and collapsing kitchens (I laughed but also checked my footing), then pointed out where Game of Thrones filmed. I tried to imagine dragons swooping overhead but honestly, it was wild enough just watching the waves smash below. Didn’t expect to feel so small up there.

The drive up to Giant’s Causeway was all rolling green and sheep that looked like they’d been painted onto the hills. When we finally got out, you could smell salt and something earthy — maybe seaweed or wet stone. I didn’t think much about whiskey before this day trip from Dublin but the Titanic Distillers stop in Belfast surprised me. The air inside smelled sweet and sharp all at once — like toasted grain with something darker underneath. The guide here was quick with jokes (“No sinking ships today!”) and poured us a tasting that actually warmed me up after all that wind outside. We had time to wander around Belfast City Hall before heading back south; I grabbed crisps for the bus but kind of wished I’d gone for a pint instead. Still think about that castle view sometimes, especially when it rains at home.
