The experience

We bumped along a narrow lane outside Galway, the kind where grass grows up the middle and you’re not sure if you’re lost or just early. The air smelled sharp (like wet grass and something woolly), and then Tom waved us down from the gate. He’s the farmer here, boots muddy, smile easy. There were sheep everywhere, dotted across the green slopes above Killary Fjord. I remember thinking: these mountains really do look like postcards, but colder.

Tom handed out wellies (which was good because my trainers would’ve drowned in mud), and then called over his sheepdog, Fly, I think? She sat so still until he whistled, then shot off like a black-and-white arrow. Watching her round up the flock was wild. She barely made a sound but somehow every sheep moved as if they’d rehearsed it. Tom explained how he trains them from pups. He said it takes patience and “a bit of bribery.” I tried to whistle too but just got spit on my chin. Tom laughed.

If you come in summer, there’s this whole other thing: sheep shearing by hand. No machines. Just old metal clippers and a lot of strong arms. The wool comes off in thick sheets that smell kind of earthy and lanolin-rich (I didn’t expect that). And if there are lambs about (which there were for us). You might end up bottle-feeding one. Their noses are damp and they nuzzle your palm like they know you already. I still think about that view over Killary Fjord while holding a wiggly lamb: windy, bright, sort of perfect in its own scruffy way.
