USAT Liberty Shipwreck Scuba Diving in Tulamben: Shore Entry
The wreck is a short distance from the beach, so you walk in instead of spending time on a boat.
Discover Scuba Diving at the USAT Liberty Shipwreck in Tulamben is a beginner-friendly introduction to diving that starts on the sand and ends exploring a sunken cargo ship, with a live English-speaking instructor, full equipment and high-quality underwater photos. The shore entry means no long boat ride, and the 4-hour experience includes lunch and locker storage. Minimum age is 18; not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy or cardiovascular concerns.
The Experience
You arrive at Tulamben beach with zero diving experience and walk straight into the water. A safety briefing on the sand covers the gear, how to breathe through the regulator and the hand signals your instructor will use to check in with you. Then you wade into the shallows—calm, clear water where you practice the basics until your body stops fighting the equipment and your mind settles. This is where most dive operations stop for the day. Here, once you're ready, you move deeper.
The USAT Liberty Wreck sits just offshore, a 120-meter cargo ship that went down in 1942 and is now home to corals, schools of tropical fish and the kind of moment people travel for. Your instructor stays an arm's length away the entire time, watching your breathing and your comfort level. You're not racing through a checklist—you're moving slowly enough to notice the fish, the encrusted metal, the way light filters down through the water. Throughout the dive, the instructor photographs you against the wreck, capturing the surreal fact that you're breathing underwater and it's working.
Back on shore, you debrief in the locker area, change out of the wetsuit and review the digital photos on a screen—proof that you did this, and proof that it's not as terrifying as it looked from the beach. Lunch is included, so you eat and let the adrenaline settle before heading back. The whole experience runs 4 hours. If you book the option with intercity transfer, the driver picks you up from your hotel and brings you back, so the only thing you arrange is showing up.

I've never dived before—will I be able to do this?
Yes. Discover Scuba Diving at the USAT Liberty Shipwreck is built for people with zero experience. You start in shallow water, practice until you're comfortable, and only move deeper once your instructor confirms you're ready. The minimum age is 18, and you should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness.
How long does the whole thing take?
The experience runs 4 hours from start to finish, including the safety briefing, shallow-water practice, the wreck exploration and the debrief on shore. Lunch is included, so you're not rushed.
What makes the USAT Liberty Wreck different from other dive sites?
The wreck sits 50 meters from the beach in Tulamben, so you enter from the sand instead of taking a long boat ride. Most beginner dives require a boat journey that can take an hour or more; here you walk in, which means less time traveling and more time actually diving.
Do I get photos of my dive?
Yes. Your instructor photographs you underwater throughout the dive and provides high-quality digital photos after you return to shore, so you have a record of your first time breathing underwater.
What's included in the price?
Discover Scuba Diving at the USAT Liberty Shipwreck includes all SCUBA equipment, a live guide in English (also available in Chinese, Malay or Cantonese), lunch and locker storage. If you choose the option with intercity transfer, hotel pickup and drop-off are included as well.
Are there any health conditions that would prevent me from diving?
Diving is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy or poor cardiovascular health. If you have any medical concerns, discuss them with the operator before booking.
