The Experience

The day starts at Nusa Dua Beach, where the sand runs bright white and the water stays clear enough to see why swimmers and surfers choose it. You can rent a lounge chair with an umbrella for the afternoon, or walk the shoreline before the drive south toward Uluwatu Temple—about 30 minutes away. The temple sits on a cliff face above the ocean, and your guide walks you through its history and religious significance while you settle into position for the sunset.

Once the light starts to go, the Kecak and fire dance begins. This is a Balinese performance, not a recording: the dancers move in front of you as darkness falls and the fire catches. The guide stays with you through the whole sequence, and afterward you head back to your hotel in the early evening. On the way back or earlier in the day, depending on the timing, you'll also stop at Padang Padang Beach, a smaller cove wedged between rock faces.
