The experience
The day starts before dawn in Labuan Bajo and runs thirteen hours total. You board a wooden boat and head out to Padar Island first, where you trek to viewpoints overlooking the straits and neighboring islands. The walk is the main physical effort of the day. The guide leads and the pace is set by the group. From there the boat moves to Pink Beach, where you enter the water with snorkeling gear provided and explore the reef in shallow to moderate depth. The water is warm and the coral is active. The guide stays in the water with you.
After snorkeling, the boat anchors at Rinca Island for a guided walk through dry forest to spot Komodo dragons in their habitat. This is a shorter, easier walk than Padar. You return to the boat for lunch, a buffet served on deck, and then cruise to Kalong Island to watch the sunset before the return journey to Labuan Bajo. Continental breakfast, snacks, mineral water and fruit juice are provided throughout the day.
The boat is air-conditioned below deck if you need to rest between stops. A professional guide speaks English and travels with the group the entire day. Children from age three are welcome. Infants sit on an adult's lap. Safety jackets are provided and worn during water entry. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.
