The experience
Two dives at the USS Liberty wreck mean you get to know the site: the first pass to orient yourself, the second to linger on the details. The wreck sits in shallow water close enough to shore that you enter from the beach, making this the easiest wreck dive in the world. Depths range from 10 to 30 meters, with a small section even shallower, so you control how deep you go. The Liberty is a 120-meter freighter covered in coral and ringed by schools of fish. The structure itself is intact enough to navigate, and the marine life (from small reef fish to larger species) makes every dive different.
The day starts with hotel pickup and ends with drop-off, so you don't arrange transport. You'll complete a health questionnaire before entering the water, and you must bring proof of dive certification. Lunch and bottled water are provided between dives, along with coffee or tea. All diving equipment is included, and the guide speaks English and knows the site well enough to point out where the best marine life congregates.
Tulamben itself is a fishing village on the dry eastern side of Bali, and the USS Liberty is why divers come here. It's the most famous dive site on the island. The wreck has been a destination since the 1980s, and the combination of shallow depth, proximity to shore, coral coverage and fish abundance means divers of all experience levels find something to explore.
Is this one for you?The full day is spent at one site, so if you want to see multiple dive locations, this is not the choice, but the two dives at the Liberty let you explore the wreck thoroughly and leave the rest of your day free.
