The Experience

Hotel pickup from central Ubud starts the day. Your guide drives you through the district, stopping first at Mas Village, where local artisans carve wood sculptures in a style distinct to the area. From there you head to Goa Gajah—the Elephant Cave—an archaeological site that once housed Buddhist monks and Shivite priests, its entrance carved into the rock face. The temple sits in the quieter part of Ubud, away from the main tourist flow, so you move through it without the crowds that gather later in the day.

Next is Tegenunnan Waterfall, where you can wade into the water if you want to. The waterfall sits in its own village setting, and the guide will tell you how it fits into the landscape around it. Then comes Tirta Empul Temple, built around a holy mountain spring in the village of Manukaya. This is where the spirituality of the day settles in—the temple complex is active, and you walk through spaces where locals come to pray and bathe in the spring water.

The final stop is Tegalalang Rice Terraces, the famous stepped rice fields that rise and fall across the hillside. You walk through them, seeing how the paddies are cut into the slope. The guide shows you how the irrigation system works and what the different stages of growth look like. By the end of the afternoon, you've moved through four distinct landscapes—carved stone, flowing water, temple grounds and cultivated fields—all within a few miles of Ubud.
