The Experience

I’ll never forget how quiet Delhi felt at 6am—well, as quiet as Delhi ever gets. Our driver was already waiting outside the hotel, half-smiling and waving like he’d done this a thousand times. The ride to Agra in that AC car was longer than I thought (three hours), but honestly, it gave me time to wake up and watch the city fade into countryside. My friend fell asleep; I just kept watching the fields go by. The air changed somewhere past Faridabad—less diesel, more earth.

When we got to Agra, our guide Raj met us near the Taj Mahal entrance. He handed me a bottle of water before I even asked (somehow it was already warm out). Walking through those gates—yeah, I’d seen photos my whole life, but seeing the Taj Mahal for real is different. The marble almost glows; people whisper without meaning to. Raj told us about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal and pointed out tiny carvings in the stone—flowers smaller than my thumb. He laughed when I tried to pronounce “pietra dura.” Pretty sure I butchered it.

Afterwards we went over to Agra Fort, which felt massive compared to the Taj—red sandstone everywhere, echoing footsteps in empty halls. Raj showed us where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his own son (family drama runs deep here). You can see the Taj from one of the balconies if you squint past the haze. Lunch came next: buffet style at a busy place full of locals on their lunch breaks. I still remember how sweet the mango chutney tasted after all that walking.

Last stop was Itimad-ud-Daulah—the “Baby Taj.” It’s quieter there; you hear birds instead of crowds. The gardens smelled faintly of jasmine and dust, and for a moment it felt like we were somewhere private. On the drive back to Delhi I kept replaying that first glimpse of white marble in my head. Sometimes travel sneaks up on you like that—you think it’s about seeing something famous, but it ends up being about small moments you didn’t plan for.
