The experience

You meet at the sailing lounge at Dharaj Mahal in Colaba, steps from the jetty. Staff fit you with a life jacket, helmet, gloves and goggle ties, walk you through the safety briefing, and brief you on walkie-talkie communication with the jetty before you board the Beneteau. The boat combines racing performance with comfort on the water, and from the moment you leave the dock, Mumbai looks different: the city recedes and the water opens up.

Once under way, you choose your role. Sit back and watch the Gateway of India, the Taj Mahal Hotel, working lighthouses and the traffic of cargo ships pass by, or step up to the wheel with your instructor at your side. The instructor is qualified to teach you the basics of sailing and handle the boat. You decide how much you want to steer and how much you want to observe. The route runs through Mumbai Harbour, and the timing is built around the sunset, so the light shifts as you sail. Drinking water and sunscreen are on board.

The whole outing runs 90 minutes, which means you can fit it into an afternoon or evening without reshaping your day. Wear clothes that move with you (light trousers, shorts or capris), and shoes with grip like crocs or sandals with straps. Skip anything tight or anything with a heel.
