The experience
The tour opens at the Gateway of India, built in 1924, where you spend time photographing the monument and the adjacent Taj Hotel and Colaba causeway. From there the route moves through the colonial business district: the Rajabai Clock Tower (1878), a world heritage site housed in the University of Mumbai campus; Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the UNESCO-listed railway station completed in 1888 in High Victorian Gothic style; and the Bombay Municipal Corporation building across from it. You stop at each to take photos and absorb the scale of these structures.
The middle of the day takes you to the Hanging Gardens, a 125-year-old park built on a hill over a water reservoir, where hedges are carved into animal shapes and you get panoramic views of Marine Drive (known as the Queen's Necklace for its curve of lights at night) and the Arabian Sea. You also visit the Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum, a historical house dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi with exhibits of his life in pictures, texts and films. Then comes Dhobi Ghat, a 138-year-old open-air laundry where washer-men (Dhobis) work in the open to clean and dry clothes: a working neighborhood most tours skip.
The route crosses the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, a modern cable-stayed bridge, and ends in Bandra at Mount Mary Church, a Roman Catholic church originally built in the 16th century and rebuilt in 1761, with semi-Gothic architecture. Along the way you pass Bandra Fort (built by the Portuguese in 1640), which offers panoramic views of the Arabian Sea. Transport is by air-conditioned minivan throughout, and pickup is included from your hotel or cruise terminal.
