The first thing that hit me in Delhi was the mix of old and new—rickshaws weaving past glassy buildings, the air thick with spice and car horns. Our driver met us right at arrivals, holding a sign with my name (always a relief after a long flight). We dropped our bags at Suncourt Yatri hotel and headed straight out. India Gate looked almost golden in the late afternoon sun, and at Raj Ghat, you could hear birds over the hum of city life. The Lotus Temple was quieter than I expected—inside, it smelled faintly of incense and wet stone.

Next morning, we left for Mandawa. The road out of Delhi is busy but once you hit Shekhawati, everything slows down. In Mandawa, we wandered narrow lanes past faded murals and stopped for chai near Murmuria Haveli—locals always seem to know where to find the best tea. The fort here isn’t crowded; you can actually hear your footsteps echo on the old stone floors. That night at Paawana Haveli hotel, I fell asleep listening to distant temple bells.

Bikaner brought us to Junagarh Fort—massive walls rising out of the dust—and then to Deshnok’s Rat Temple. I’ll admit, seeing hundreds of holy rats scurrying around is something you don’t forget (watch your step). Hotel Sagar had these big windows that let in the dry desert breeze.

On our way to Jodhpur we stopped at Pokaran Fort—a quick visit but worth it for the view alone. Jodhpur itself is all blue houses and bustling markets around the Clock Tower bazaar. Umaid Bhawan Palace looks like something out of a movie. At Mandore Guest house, there were peacocks strutting around in the garden early in the morning.

Mehrangarh Fort sits high above Jodhpur—you can see for miles from up there. Inside Moti-Mahal and Phool Mahal, sunlight filters through colored glass windows onto marble floors. Jaswant Thada is peaceful; locals come here just to sit by the water. We also checked out Umaid Public Museum before heading back for some spicy street snacks (try mirchi vada if you like heat).

The drive to Pushkar took us through Ajmer where Taragarh Fort stands guard over the city—it’s a bit of a climb but worth it for the breeze up top. In Pushkar, we watched evening prayers by the lake as incense drifted on the wind. The Brahma temple is small but always busy with pilgrims.

Jaipur was next—Jaigarh Fort has these huge cannons and great views over Amber Palace below. That evening I caught a Bollywood film at Raj Mandir cinema (the crowd cheers during dance numbers). Anuraag Villa felt homely after all that noise.

The next day was packed: Amber Fort’s mirrored halls glitter even on cloudy mornings; Hawa Mahal looks delicate up close; City Palace is still home to Jaipur’s royal family (our guide pointed out their private quarters). Mirla temple was quiet except for chanting monks.

On our way to Agra we stopped at Abhaneri’s stepwells—so deep you get dizzy looking down—and Fatehpur Sikri’s red sandstone arches echo with history. In Agra, Hotel Atulyaa Taj has a rooftop view where you can spot the Taj Mahal glowing at sunset.

Catching sunrise at the Taj Mahal is worth every early-morning yawn—the marble changes color as light comes up behind it. Agra Fort feels more lived-in than most forts; Sikandra has wild green parrots everywhere. Back in Delhi that night, we squeezed in Humayun's Tomb before dinner.

The last day was all about Old Delhi: Red Fort’s ramparts stretch forever; Jama Masjid fills with prayers; Chandni Chowk smells like frying samosas and sweet jalebi; Qutb Minar stands tall against smoggy skies. Our driver dropped us at the airport with plenty of time—I still had dust on my shoes from Rajasthan’s roads.
