Natural Dye Block Printing Workshop Jaipur: Hand-Carved Blocks
Press carved blocks onto fabric and watch plant-based dyes bloom into patterns
A 90-minute natural dye block printing workshop in Jaipur where you learn traditional hand-carving and printing techniques using plant-based dyes and wooden blocks. Guided by a skilled artisan, you'll transfer intricate patterns onto fabric, create a finished textile to take home, and discover how natural dyes connect to cultural heritage and sustainable practice.
The experience
You start by handling the hand-carved wooden blocks themselves: feeling the precision of the carving, understanding how the artisan shaped each one. The guide walks you through the plant-based dye palette, explaining which plants yield which colors and why these methods reduce environmental impact compared to synthetic alternatives. Then you move to the fabric: you'll press the blocks into dye and transfer the patterns directly onto cloth, repeating the motion to build layered designs. The blocks are yours to control, the pressure and placement entirely in your hands, so no two prints come out identical.
The workshop runs 90 minutes, which gives you time to experiment with multiple blocks and color combinations without rushing. Coffee or tea is provided, and you leave with a cotton hand bag printed with your own work. Something you made, not something you watched. The bag itself can become a canvas for more printing if you want to keep working after the session ends.
What’s included
- Coffee and tea.
- a cotton hand bag printed with your own block-printed design, which can also be used as a canvas for additional printing.

Top questions
What exactly do I print onto during the workshop?
You print onto fabric using the hand-carved wooden blocks and plant-based dyes. The finished textile goes home with you in a cotton hand bag that doubles as a carry piece.
Do I need any experience with printmaking or dyeing to join?
No experience is required. The artisan guides you through every step, from handling the blocks to applying the dye and pressing the patterns onto fabric. The workshop is designed for anyone 14 and older.
Why are plant-based dyes different from the dyes used in most commercial printing?
Plant-based dyes come directly from natural sources and create the hues without synthetic chemicals, which reduces the environmental impact of the dyeing process and connects the work to traditional textile practices that have existed for centuries.
How long does the workshop actually take?
The session runs 90 minutes, which is enough time to work with multiple blocks, experiment with different color combinations, and complete a finished piece you can take with you.
